Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs and DOIs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Author Guidelines

Articles and research notes should preferably not exceed 12 000 words (excluding references). For other contributions, the  maximum length is 4000 words.

This journal does not charge APCs or submission charges. It is open access and applies a Creative Commons license.

Double-anonymised peer-review and editorial review

All submitted articles are reviewed in a double-anonymised peer review process. In addition, all materials submitted, such as research notes, are subject to rigorous editorial review.

JASS adheres to the following requirements for the peer review process:

  • The manuscript has been subject to a peer review by at least two persons invited to assess and write an opinion on it at the request of the editorial staff.
  • The reviewers are PhD level researchers or other experts external to the editing board and independent in relation to the manuscript to be reviewed.
  • The editorial team of the Åland Islands Peace Institute sends the referees' comments to the author(s) of the manuscript.
  • The peer review process is documented according to the instructions (https://www.tsv.fi/en/services/label-for-peer-reviewed-scholarly-publications/requirements-for-use).

Stylistic requirements

The manuscripts submitted should be written in either British or American English.

Apart from the article itself the following is required by the manuscript:

  • Abstract (c. 200 words)
  • Keywords for indexing
  • Brief presentation of the author
  • Index/Table of contents.

Furthermore, the article should be divided into numbered sections and subsections. Subsections should be numbered 1.1 proceeding in numerical order beginning with the Introduction:

2. Section 2

    2.1 Subsection 1

    2.2 Subsection 2

3. Section 3

All sections and subsections must be given a heading.

Citation requirements

All information relied upon from other works, must be cited in footnotes. By submitting a work to JASS, the author guarantees that he or she is solely responsible for the content of the text and its citations.

Authors are free to use their own citation systems, such as the Author-Date Style, as long as it is consistently used throughout the text. However, please note: As JASS uses Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs,) for all materials, authors are required to provide DOIs for references where available. Please see Crossref DOI Display Guidelines.

Articles

Articles undergo a double-blind peer review process. Articles should not exceed 12 000 words (excluding references)

Research notes

Research notes are observations of ongoing research, by the author or others. Research notes undergo editorial review. Thay should not exceed 12 000 words (excluding references). 

Commentaries

Commentaries are personal reflections on topical events, processes etc. Commentaries undergo editorial review and should not exceed 4 000 words. 

Speeches

Speeches held at seminars, conferences and symposia. 

Book review

Book reviews do not undergo peer review. They should not exceed 4 000 words in length.

Project note

Project notes may include information about ongoing or concluded projects. Project notes should not exceed 4 000 words.

Authors retain copyright and grant the journal right of first publication with the work simultaneously licensed under Creative Commons CC-BY-NC-SA that allows others to share the work non-commercially with an acknowledgement of the work’s authorship and initial publication in this journal under the terms provided by the license.

Authors agree to allow JASS to store the metadata associated with the material in Crossref.
